If the sight of anything with sails makes you cringe, rest assured that the ships in Windstar's fleet are not real sailing boats.
They are actually small cruise ships with sails used to increase speed when the wind happens to be blowing in the right direction.
This is cruising at its best - no dressy clothes or ties for men, single open seating and vessels small enough that the service is personal and the chance to meet so many other interesting passengers.
The big surprise is the high quality of the cuisine, which surpassed the fare on some of the ritziest vessels afloat costing four times the amount.

Cruising with Windstar is as laid-back as cruising gets. After a lingering meal chatting with newfound friends, a few people head for sole performer in the lounge or the tiny casino, but most grab a video and/or CD's, order popcorn from room service and relax.
In the Caribbean, Belize and Costa Rica, the emphasis is on water sports and visiting tiny isles conventional cruise ships can't enter - a barbecue on a deserted beach is divine!
Try a Greek Island/Turkey cruise, it has been hailed as one of the best available in this region. Enjoy up to 15 hours in some ports with plenty of time to rent a car and see incredible places at your leisure, or enjoy a casual lunch or dinner ashore in a small cafe and stroll back to the ship when it suits you.
It may be a quasi-sailing experience, but the creature comforts are wonderful - large cabins with enormous storage space, all with TV/VCR and CD player, there is a free rental library for videos and discs, outstanding service and an aft water sports platform.
The "no tipping required" policy is just part of the gracious attitude of service one encounters from staff and officers, who freely intermingle with passengers. These are terrific ships for honeymooners and those who love water sports, especially on the new Belize itinerary.
